AI Agents for Receivables Are Here. Is Your Data Ready?
New AI agents can chase customers, match payments and forecast cash. Here is how GCC and India SMEs can get their receivables data ready first.
This week two large finance technology firms launched AI agents aimed squarely at working capital: chasing customers, matching payments and forecasting cash. The tools are built for big companies, but the direction is clear for everyone. Whether an AI agent helps your business or simply adds noise depends less on the software and more on the state of your customer and invoice data.
What was launched this week
On 12 October, FIS launched its Agentic Insights Suite for the office of the CFO. It includes a cash flow forecasting module that projects cash over several time horizons and tests what happens if customers pay late or suppliers must be paid sooner. It draws on the ERP, treasury and CRM systems, plus credit bureau and public data.
Two days later, Genpact made its Accounts Receivable Suite generally available for manufacturing and mining clients. Its agents rank customer accounts by risk and suggest next actions, manage disputes from intake to escalation, and match payments to invoices.
Genpact estimates up to 80% touchless cash application. More useful, though, is its own caveat: results vary by client systems, process maturity, data quality, implementation scope and configuration. That sentence is the whole story for a finance team thinking about AI agents.
The wider picture backs this up. Deloitte's Finance Trends 2026 study, which surveyed over 1,300 finance leaders at companies with revenue above US$1 billion, found that 63% had fully deployed AI in finance, but only 21% reported a clear, measurable return. Working capital was named by 46% as an area where AI agents can help.
Why your data decides the result
An AI agent working on receivables reads exactly what your ledger tells it. If a customer appears three times under slightly different names, the agent sees three smaller debts instead of one large one. If credit terms are wrong in the system, it chases people who are not yet late, which damages relationships you have spent years building.
Cash matching has the same weakness. When a payment arrives with no invoice number and a vague bank reference, no software can be sure which invoice it settles. It either guesses or sends the item back to a person, and the promised time saving disappears.
Forecasting is no different. A 13-week cash forecast built on payment history is only as good as that history. If disputes were never logged, the model cannot tell a slow payer from a customer who is withholding payment over a quality complaint.
For example, a Doha trading company with 400 active customers might find 30 duplicate customer records, 60 unapplied receipts and disputes tracked in individual email inboxes. An agent switched on in that state will produce confident but wrong answers. Two or three weeks of clean-up first changes that.
What this means for your business
In the UAE, e-invoicing is pushing businesses towards cleaner data whether they plan to use AI or not. The Ministry of Finance has reconfirmed 1 January 2027 as the Phase One start date for businesses with revenue of AED 50 million or more, and the deadline for those businesses to appoint an Accredited Service Provider has been extended to 30 October 2026. Businesses below that threshold follow from 1 July 2027.
Structured e-invoices are exactly the kind of clean, consistent record that AI agents work well with. If you are preparing for the mandate, you are already doing half the groundwork for automation. Check the detail of your obligations with your adviser.
In India, e-invoicing became mandatory from 1 August 2023 for GST taxpayers with aggregate turnover above Rs 5 crore. Many SMEs therefore already issue invoices in a standard format. The gap is usually on the other side: linking customer receipts back to those invoices.
Across Qatar and the rest of the GCC, the same logic holds. The businesses that gain most from AI agents next year will be the ones that tidy their receivables data this quarter.
A data-readiness checklist
Before you switch on any AI agent for collections, cash matching or forecasting, work through this list:
- Clean the customer master. One record per customer, with correct contacts, agreed payment terms and credit limits.
- Clear old unapplied cash. Match or investigate every receipt that is sitting unallocated.
- Ask customers to quote invoice numbers. Put the request on every invoice and statement.
- Log disputes in one place. Use simple reason codes, such as pricing, quantity or quality, so the system can tell disputes from slow payment.
- Reconcile the receivables ledger to the general ledger. Do it every month, not just at year end.
- Keep at least 12 months of payment history. Forecasts need a track record to learn from.
- Set the agent's limits in writing. For example, it may send reminders on its own but may not issue credit notes or change terms.
- Record your starting numbers. Debtor days, the share of receipts matched automatically and balances over 90 days, so you can tell whether the agent is working.
- UAE businesses at AED 50 million or more: confirm your Accredited Service Provider is appointed by 30 October.
If you use NexCFO AI for AR collections or bank reconciliation, the same rule applies: tidy data first, then automate.
AI agents will do the chasing; clean data decides whether they chase the right people.
